How long do chickens have to stay in their incubator?

I'm pretty sure that its 24 hours after hatching, but then I'm not sure what I should do after that. Do I put them straight in the coop, that seems a little early. My friend put them in a small animal cage, like one of a guinea pigs, and put a soft light on them, but I'm not sure if thats the right way.
